The renowned architect Carlos Rubio Carvajal commitment to apply "good architecture" and says: "I would have to break the taboos of housing today, very conventional and conservative."
Many of the landmarks of Madrid which are currently unused not only traverse an obvious poor condition but also share a common characteristic: their disregard for the possible conversion into housing. The truth is that many of these properties do not even have a real plan of rehabilitation, but those other "in process" see no residential use as a possibility.
As example we will show six of these emblematic Spanish capital forgotten buildings, to exemplify the "residential amnesia" from their owners, which obscures them the fact that those buildings can be used for living: Palacio de la Música, Edificio España, Mansion of the Vargas, Legazpi Market, Building for Chamberí and Alzheimer Center "La Latina."
Palacio de la Música
This construction of 6.630 square meters is considered as a “Cultural Site" and belongs to the Fundación Especial Caja Madrid since 2008. Until then, and due to its privileged location in Madrid's Gran Via, its use was primarily cultural and contained some cinemas. Madrid City Council authorized the Rehabilitation Plan and the works already completed. Market of Legazpi
With numerous rehabilitation projects behind it, the former Fruit and Vegetable Market in Legazpi is waiting for one of them to a successful conclusion. Building in Chamberí
In the 20s the building housed the City Hall, but to date the construction seated at Calle Alberto Aguilera is empty. These are just six examples of historic buildings in the capital without a job or benefit right now despite their good locations and potential of any kind, whether residential or not. Rubio Carvajal explains that there is a demand to which it draws live in less conventional places that have nothing to do with the new PAU of Madrid. "In these iconic buildings, we might have to do houses with open and fluid spaces.
